Christmas From Heaven

by Tom Brokow
Illustrated by Robert T. Barrett

I confess I have not yet read this book, but I'm including it in my reviews because I know this story well, and I know the work of Brokaw. It goes like this... During the Berlin blockade in 1948, the Soviet Union kept supplies from reaching the people in West Berlin. During an an airlift, a U.S. pilot by the name of Gail Halvorsen, discovered that the children there rarely had chewing gum or candy. So he got the idea of dropping candy in handkerchief parachutes. He inspired other pilots, and at Christmastime, dropped hundreds of these little parachutes to the excited children below. A CD with the story told by Brokow and accompanied by the Mormon Tabernacle choir is included.
